On December 29, 2024, the Alliance For Just Money (AFJM) and the entire monetary reform community lost a great friend, theorist, teacher, leader, and fellow member, Mark Pash, after a long bout with cancer. Mark was a founding member of our Alliance, participating in its 2018 formation and in the organization out of which AFJM grew, the American Monetary Institute (AMI). He presented at AMI annual conferences since at least 2010, and most recently in 2021 on reducing management and labor conflict and eliminating poverty through monetary reform. His ideas for monetary reform in the presentations were included in his 2017 book Creating a 21st Century Win-Win Economy.

Mark had a successful career as a financial planner and saw firsthand how the present monetary system drags down the entire economy. He was creative in developing strategies for speaking with both Republicans and with Democrats, and wrote literature to address the concerns of both conservatives and progressives. With fellow AFJM member Virginia Hammon, Mark co-authored a 2019 book that presents a pathway for how we pay for a better world through monetary reform. He was instrumental in AFJM’s development of the American Monetary Reform Act, which updates and strengthens the 2011-12 National Emergency Employment Defense Act and was approved by AFJM membership in 2024.

Mark was always generous with his ideas and time. He sponsored an evening of monetary discussions at every AMI conference. He welcomed everyone and made people from many different stations and stages of life feel included. He traveled to meet with Congress members and created a personal relationship with them, always educating for money reform. Mark was always supportive of the Alliance membership. He served on the Alliance Board 2021-2022 and was a very valued member of the Legislative Action Committee. He wrote the first draft of AFJM’s 8-page booklet and paid for our first two marketing campaign mailings. If you want to print and distribute copies of it yourself, you can use this print-ready file, which is also on AFJM’s Archive page.

We will miss Mark’s insights, encouragement, and experience. Indeed, we already do. Mostly we will miss his laughter and easy way of presenting monetary reform to the world. We commit, in his name, to continue the work of monetary reform to make our world safe and just for all. We encourage all reading this tribute to do likewise by getting involved with and donating to AFJM and AMI to pay respect to Mark and follow in his footsteps.

~Tom Wilda, AFJM Board Member (2018-present); Chair of Legislative Action Committee (2021-present), and Chair of Board Development Committee (2018-2022)

Sorry to hear of Mark’s passing. My condolences to all who knew him. I briefly interacted with him at one of the first AFJM coffee houses I attended online, and he was so welcoming to a new comer. Sent me his book afterwards, of course, and we exchanged a few emails of correspondence.
A mensch for sure. May his memory be a blessing.

Thanks for sharing your snippet of interaction with Mark, Andrew. So nice to know he touched you too. Thanks as well for all your support for AFJM. See you at an AFJM or AMI gathering soon, I hope.
